From Nothweiler at Dahn provide for various hikes to the paths to the castle ruins.
Since we had recently made the 4-castle tour during the week (www.gps-tour.info/de/touren/detail.75022.html), which is very attractive for its views, there should be a similar hike today. On this sunny Sunday but too many people were at the Castle Tour from Nothweiler working for us, so that we chose the following alternative:
First, it comes from the Orsmitte with the blue bar up toward the ruins Wegelnburg. This tour, ridden in December in freezing temperatures and snow leads to the border with France a total of about 800 meters. Due to the weather conditions we have chosen mostly safe way. The starting point was the sawmill in Bobenthal (180m). From there we went to the south-west through Klaffental up on Riebelseck by up to 375 meters of the pass, the French border is crossed. 100 meters below we ride at Wingen over, then turn northeast and it goes on heimbach along to Heimbach source (the last 200m extremely narrow) then on the snowy road to the Col du Litschhof. Here we make a short detour to Gimbelhof with beautiful views of the castle Fleckenstein. When Gimbelhof connect horses, blankets on it and we go to the inn, unfortunately for holidays until 26.12. has closed - gone stupid. At least we got to eat a little while (incl. Gingerbread and homemade cinnamon waffles), even a few treats for the horses. Starting point of the tour is a parking lot in the middle of Nothweiler. Since large parts of the connector that is run in Alsace no purely Palatine hike. While Mannheim itself is an industrial city with relatively few opportunities for nature and landscape photography the Palatinate Forest is less than an hour's drive away and after some walks there I really enjoy the area. By now I think I have identified several interesting places which I will visit in the coming months.
One of them is the Wegelnburg. It's the highest castle ruin in the Palatinate lip sugar scrub and lies in a very remote and sparsely populated region right next to the border to France. The first time I've been there was during the day and even then I was impressed by the extremely wide view, covering miles and miles of forest and hills. The next time I was getting up very early in order to arrive there before sunrise. It was really hard to get there that early since you can't drive all the way to the castle and have to hike up the hill for several kilometers. However, when I finally arrived up there the view was absolutely magnificent.
